My Fitness Journey: From Vanity to Sanity

image1 (6)

Let’s just say, I was never really athletic, being five foot one and always considered a “skinny girl” sports weren’t my thing. I remember being a high school freshman in gym class and my coach giving me a “Most Improved” student award. His words were something like this, “Jones-y when you came to my class you couldn’t do nothing. Now, you can do a little bit.”

In college, I started to get a little bit more serious about fitness. Remember, in undergrad when we had to take a certain amount of gym credit hours? I ended up taking a course where we were required to do an hour workout that included both cardio and a strength training. I’d go to the gym wipe my student ID and get to it. About, 20 minutes on an elliptical and the rest of the hour spent during a strength training circuit.

After a few weeks, I definitely liked the way I felt after a good workout. That’s not what got me though. What hooked me to the whole working out thing was the way my body was toning up and sculpting. I’d bask in the attention I’d get when I would walk past guys on campus, at parties, or the mall. You know when you hear them say, “Ooooh, who is that?!”. I’d keep walking like I didn’t hear it, like I didn’t want to hear it. Truth was I needed to hear it. That male stamp of approval was the main reason I showed up to the gym. I wanted to be cute, to be seen, to be desirable.

My fitness goals were all about gaining male attention and adoration. It wasn’t about my health, connecting with my body, having more energy, or anything intrinsic. It was all superficial. Just vanity.

Even in the midst of my challenges, I’ve always maintained a fairly consistent workout routine. Really, it wasn’t until a few years ago, after doing a lot of the inner work that my workouts shifted from being all about sculpted legs and a nice booty to having more energy, a good mood, healthy heart, mental fortitude, and confidence. After I started reading magazine articles, about how working out helped to lower your risk of heart disease, depression, boosted your mood, and improved your self-image that was the tipping point. Slowly, my fitness life became more about being the best version of myself and pushing my limits both mentality and physically.

Whether I’m in a yoga class, boot camp, or working out by myself at a gym I enjoy it because it’s a lifestyle choice. Don’t get me wrong, sometimes it hurts so bad, that last lap, one more push up, another burpee! I keep going because I know that I grow each time my feet touch the mat, my arms push my body up off the pavement, my feet run a little further and faster than the day before. There are some nights, I stay up til 1:00 am and still rise up for boot camp at 4:50 am. If it were all about being cute, I would just hit the snooze and rollover. Just being cute is not enough. Being strong, clear minded, having the energy to accomplish my goals, and great health are worth passing up on the extra snooze.

Don’t get it twisted, I still appreciate a nice booty and sculpted legs, but looking good is just the cherry on top.  Reflecting over my fitness journey, has made it quite clear to me that when we allow ourselves to make that shift from doing things solely for vanity to creating a deeper, sacred, and sanity driven purpose we become more powerful, consistent and committed. Our depth of commitment to not just our fitness, but our businesses, families and dreams expands. We become like the balloon slowly expanding as the helium fills it up. Just like that balloon, we too are filled up with the kind of enthusiasm that carries us all the way up!

Is there a fitness routine you want to finally commit to? If so, let me know in the comments below. Comments aren’t your thing…that’s ok. Tweet me @pretymotivated. Can’t wait to hear from you!

How to Boost Your Willpower

_MG_3817final

Boosting your willpower. I’m sharing some easy breezy ways to WILL your way to living your truth.

Whenever we “make up our minds” to change. Our brain sends signals to the body. Hey guys “we are going to start working out at 6am every morning”. Sounds great, right?

It’s never that simple, because the cells in our bodies are used to not working out. They’re more accustomed to sleeping in and pushing the snooze button. So our cells huddle up together, like a football team. Then they send send a message back up the spinal cord to your brain to get you back on your old habits. Then before you know it’s 6am and you’re hitting the snooze button saying “I’ll start tomorrow”.

Sound familiar?! Listen, I get it!

Since we are re-wiring ourselves we have to keep the temptation away to revert to those old behaviors. This means if you’re going for a healthier cleaner diet just don’t buy the bad stuff, if it’s not in your kitchen you’re a lot less likely to eat it. If you’re a shopaholic working to curb your spending then STAY AWAY FROM THE MALL and all online shopping carts! Personally, I unsubscribed from all my daily deal alerts. Much easier to save when you’re not finding the BEST DEAL EVER in your inbox every day.

After keeping our vices out of plain sight we need to hold tight to our vision and find a way to enjoy the process of transformation. This is where we get to tap back into our imagination and begin to visualize taking selfies on the beach in that bangin’ bikini, seeing all those zeros next to our name on the bank slip, or your names on the NY times best-seller list. Keeping your eyes on the prize is a great way to boost your willpower. Work that picture until it’s as clear as a glass of water.

Lastly, boost your body. Taking supplements, like ginseng, omega 3 and B-12. Are really good ways to make sure your body is ready to take you to the next level. I’ve had so many chats with my girlfriends about making the commitment to change. The main reason why they (sometimes, me too) can’t workout, start a new career or project is because they are tired. They don’t have the energy it takes to add something else to the to-do list. Whatever you do don’t leave this step out.

So let’s recap…

Because our body naturally wants things to stay the same we have to …

  • Stay away from temptation
  • Keep your Eyes on the Prize
  • Boost your body

Real talk, having a dip in your willpower is normal. Know that these tips will definitely help you keep the positivity party going…

OMG!! Last week was so good. You ever have one of those weeks where they’re so much good stuff going on that you’re like, “Whoa! I wish every week was like this?”!

Wanted you to share a few things from last week in case you missed it! I launched Pearl Box Profiles. This project is really close to my heart. I feel as a culture we’re always celebrating, applauding, and liking the social media posts of the gems that have reached a pinnacle level of success.

Celebrating people once they’ve arrived is perfectly normal, but what about all the rest of us? Do we deserve a platform? Have we earned the right to share our stories, journeys, and path to progress? I say heck YES we do! Amazing pearls among us that are taking strides, making sacrifices, and living on purpose todo lo dia (everyday), deserve to be heard and highlighted too!

What is Pretty?

My introduction to “Pretty” was on the Urban Bush Babes site, a series of black women from Milan and Paris.
Pretty is a digital postcard from women around the world, exploring how beauty standards vary from country to country. Produced by un-ruly.com, a place created to celebrate and inspire health, versatility, and the beauty of black hair.
Growing up in a small town down south, I wasn’t fully aware of the different cultures that existed throughout the world. I knew about black people, white people, what i saw on television, and oh let’s not forget the Asians that owned the store downtown and the restaurant across town.
I was always curious to know how they settled in a town with a population of 14,000 people. I swear moms had me going to the store at least once a week, guess I missed the opportunity to find out.
It wasn’t until I attended a university two hours from my hometown, that I begin to learn about different cultures. There were people from everywhere India, China, Africa, and other states living on campus and in my class. Looking back, I should have been open minded and connected more, but I was in an unknown world living in my own box.
I guess that’s why I’m so intrigued by these women from Milan and Paris expressing their thoughts and views about their culture, being a black woman, and defining pretty. I was surprised to hear that black hair products such as relaxers invaded the shelves in Paris stores only ten years ago.

What’s so important about Finding Your Fire?

FYFWhat’s so important about Finding your Fire? Your life matters and you were planted here for a purpose. Your mission should you decide to accept it is to live and be that purpose everyday.

Truth is, we are inundated daily with distractions and responsibilities that can keep us out of touch with our “inner-spiration“. Our daily grinds can keep our minds occupied with to-do lists, emails, calls, and errands to run. Once you’re done will all that you might feel like you’ve just run out of fuel.

Have you ever had a vision or goal, but you were too exhausted to pursue it? Both mentally and physically running on empty.

Don’t you hate that?! You’ve got the vision, but bringing it to life can feel like trying to make the Olympic team. #daunting

I get it! Until I started practicing what I preached. I was the same way, too drained to work consistently for my dreams.

There were times when my efforts were more like a roller coaster ride. I would be full throttle one minute. Then all of the sudden my energy & efforts would plummet like the stock market in 2008! When I finally took the leap to stop talking about it and start being about it.

The “game” changed for me. #gamechanger

This FREE live call is going to be far more interactive and fun than anything I’ve E-V-E-R done before! It’s going to be a fun-filled hour (we may go over in the Q & A, but that’s ok!). Let’s party with a purpose!

I’ll not only share the game changing tips I’ve learned from the best of the best in the self-development world. More importantly, for you I’m going to break it down into nice little chunks that you can take and make them work in your life the NEXT day. #instantgratification

No more waiting for months to see results! Think of it as the easy and simple way to not only find your FIRE, but keeping those flames going.

When is it all going down? Great question.

Thursday, July 9th at 8pm est

Want to get in on it? Here’s how…

  1. Get registered
  2. Be sure to mark your calendar
  3. Grab a notebook (you’ll definitely want to take notes)
  4. Be open minded

That’s it! Easy enough, right? I can’t wait to connect and share these game-changing tips with you!

BTW…please note that there will be hip-hop and dancing too 😉
